ArtWalk 2007 Benefiting Charity

The 2007 benefiting charity will be the Society for Community Organization (SOCO).

SoCO's work deals with people and issues that receive little serious attention in Hong Kong - either as prevalent news items in the media nor, oddly, as the focus for kindhearted charity-raising committees.

Under the surface of Hong Kong's apparent prosperity live people in poverty: old people in cramped and crowded cages and dilapidated private tenements; residents in run-down public housing estates; new immigrants from China ineligible for public assistance or housing; children; street-sleepers; low-paid workers, and your 'average' person who has no political voice. These people are the target of SoCO's services.

SoCO is a non-profit community organisation formed in 1972 that believes in equal opportunity of participation and fair distribution of social resources to be the foundation of human rights. SoCO runs direct assistance programs for the disadvantaged as well as initiating and undertaking original social policy research and taking an active advocacy role with Hong Kong decision-making bodies.
