Hong Kong Galleries and ArtWalk

[ 中文 ]

ArtWalk 2008 is organized by Hong Kong galleries and is Hong Kong’s biggest annual charity art event and since its inception in 2000 nearly HK$3 million has been raised for charity from the sale of ArtWalk tickets.

The majority of Hong Kong galleries are situated in a natural arts district: a strip that encompasses Wan Chai, Central, Sheung Wan and SOHO. An area perfect for showcasing creativity – this fragile heritage-laden area of street markets, back lanes, old traditional shops, artisans and the historically important former Victoria Prison and Central Police Station. This amalgam is made even richer by the close proximity of the central business district and a variety of restaurants, bars and late-night clubs.

Other galleries are located in Happy Valley, Causeway Bay, Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei, To Kwa Wan, Fo Tan, Kwun Tong, Chai Wan, Aberdeen and Wong Chuk Hang – attracted by more affordable rents and larger loft-style spaces.

This geographical spreads adds a richer diversity of exhibited art and gives depth and variety to Hong Kong’s art scene. ArtWalk offers an introduction to that diversity and the comprehensive ArtWalk brochure and map can be used throughout the year to enjoy art in all its multi-angled diversity.
