ArtWalk 2010 Benefiting Charity

[ 中文 ]

The 2010 benefiting charity will again be the Society for Community Organization (SoCO) - who received HK$477,000 from last year’s ArtWalk.

SoCO is a non-profit community charitable organisation formed in 1972 that believes in equal opportunity of participation and fair distribution of social resources to be the foundation of human rights.

SoCO is active in lobbying for an improvement in the lives of the 1.3 million Hong Kong people (including 370,000 children) who live below the poverty line - predominantly comprising the elderly, low-income single people and families and recent immigrants from China not eligible for government subsidies and accommodation.

SoCO undertakes activities for children and low-income groups; advocacy programmes; and, has initiated mutual self-help groups (e.g. the Elderly Rights League; New Immigrants’ Mutual Aid Association; Childrens’ Rights Association etc) and is involved in action to highlight inequity and demand government policy changes by initiating and undertaking original social policy research and taking an active advocacy role with Hong Kong decision-making bodies.

As part of ArtWalk Extra, SoCO will highlight the many ‘invisible’ people in Hong Kong who are poor, discriminated against and marginalized; this, in a city that claims - and is - a rich and successful economy. Visit Schoeni Art Gallery (Gallery 2) at 27 Hollywood Road, Central to see the SoCO display which will run 17 – 28 March 2010.
